MPAA couldn't exist without copying something!
When I saw the ad for the new 21 Jump Street — I’ll link to it, but I won’t go out of my way to see it — I was irritated. Come on, yet another remake? The MPAA wants to cauterize whole limbs of the internet over copying issues, and yet it seems like all Hollywood does is copy these days!* Wow, maybe they should try some originality from time to time, and that includes...

paulkell: Just how tough is your average DSLR memory card? Apparently tough enough to survive a year at the bottom of the ocean. Naturalist and aspiring photographer Markus Thompson was scuba diving in Deep Bay near Vancouver, British Columbia, when he found a Canon EOS 1000D. Curious, he brought it to the surface and took ut the SD card, and was actually able to recover about 50 photos.

Bad apple cops?
Stop being stupid, and stop playing us—the people whose taxes pay for law enforcement jobs—for stupid. If you want to claim that a few bad apples are making all the good “peace officers” look bad, then you need to eliminate the bad apples! Sticking the scapegoats back on the street (either right away or after paid leave) implies management approves of their actions, which...

Seen in a DMCA notice
“The illegal downloading and distribution of copyrighted works are serious offenses…” I disagree. As far as I’m concerned, bodily harm (physical assault) would be serious. Something that would affect someone’s mental health, like mental or emotional neglect, would be serious. I could agree that this is an offense, without the serious label. Some people take themselves...

Dear Franziska Wanninger or Franziska Wenninscha
Blog posts and tweets have been known to force companies and individuals to take responsibility for their bad behavior and make good. I’m watching to see what happens here, and I’m wondering what implications this has for future conflicts.Amplify’d from momoology.infoAs I am continuing to suffer a loss from this horrible event, I’ve decided that I will use my blog to write letters to...

I’m not sure why these came up in my searches for capacitive/iPhone/Samsung Moment styli, but I kind of like them. I doubt they’re of any use to me, and I am a bit irritated with the Best Buy site for giving me this and other results that simply will not suffice.

iPowerFAIL
Like countless others, I have been known to say that I learn something new every day. Today was only minutes old when I learned what not to do when installing an iPhone update via iTunes in a 40 yr-old house that’s not been updated to meet modern power demands. One should not use a PC; one should use a portable device (laptop or MacBook) with a well-charged battery, or at least one...

Dear iPhone, You smug, shiny, illegitimate son-of-a-calculator, if I hear you laughing at me and saying, “I knew you’d be mine, eventually!” one more time, I’m going to knock you into tomorrow — but not very hard. Just so you know, you couldn’t win until you were freed from your prison, and you still have a lot of improvements to make. Now stop ordering me to...

How to get a blogger to blog?
Yesterday, I had a high priority call in my queue about a USB device not responding. Within 3 minutes, I’d sorted through the mess of cables and determined the device wasn’t connected. The reply? “Oh no! You’re going to blog me again!” I assured her/him I’d not been in the mood to blog for months.

Learning about Imindi →
Finally got around to checking out the Imindi panel video from TechCrunch50 2008. One of the panelists who was commenting totally had an even shorter attention span than I do, because he suggested that the Imindi guys do something that the presenter said was already a feature. And did the panelist then go on to say he wouldn’t even want to use that feature? Not saying I’d have...

Windows Mobile Stream Dreams
I’d like to get HTC Streaming Media, TCPMP and GSPlayer to play well together on my WinMo phone. I want the right app to launch whether I want YouTube, Shoutcast or…uh…whatever HTC’s app does. No, I haven’t yet looked for a solution. I’ll get around to it. It might be as simple as installing an updated version of something.

Harvard gets in your face?
Just heard on my husband’s alarm clock that Harvard students have gone startup crazy, modeling their endeavors after FaceBook. Hearing only a brief snippet before Mr. Mage hit the snooze button, I can only wonder why the focus was on Harvard folks.

I'm Picised off!
Dear Picis, Why is your so-called “Smart” product acting so dumb? I’m seriously sick and tired of being paged about it every BLEEPING weekday morning! I had to clear eleven pages about those bedeviled machines before I even left the house today, and I want to know why. Did we create our own problems, or did you? Yours truly, FriedbyFish

How fluorescent light bulbs save money
In my experience, these bulbs last only a few weeks (no wonder they resemble question marks). A procrastinator will perforce spend a prodigious amount of time in darkness or dim lighting. Now, I did poorly in high school physics, but I think I can recall that where there is no light (or heat), there generally can’t be much in the way of energy consumption. Ingenious! or, maybe I mean...

WSJ: EU wants to make IT more attractive to women... →
The EU, facing an IT worker shortage, quite logically thinks that making the field more appealing to the conspicuously absent female population will help address that shortage. They’ve decided that women avoid careers in IT because they do not want to be perceived as geeks, and they feel that women see IT as boring and too hard. I guess that’s why only two of the women who pledged a...

Fujitsu P1620: I Have Expensive Tastes
Ow. In order to configure the Fujitsu P1620 with Vista instead of XP Pro or XP Tablet PC Edition, one must pay $300 to upgrade from 512MB to 1GB RAM, or at least that’s what the customizer is telling me. Gosh darn it, the memory appears to be user-replaceable! Considering I paid perhaps a third of that for a 2GB stick last year, I’m just…uh…going to say “Ow,”...

U.S. Customs Embraces Dangerous, Invasive... →
What do burglars, identity thieves and US Customs have in common? All have divested people of their rightfully-owned property and data.   It is now quite clear what I must do the next time I travel: Have only a “disposable” computer (if the feds  confiscated=stole it for no good reason, I’d still have my favorite to come home to) Change the password to one resembling nothing...
