Someone sent me a WHAT on FaceBook? Uh, ok, I guess that’s what friends are for. I was inclined to say, “FaceBook is so weird,” but after arguing on FriendFeed that certain bloggers should blame people and not services for strange human behavior, I guess I would be a hypocrite if I gave in to my temptation.

People are so strange! It does make life interesting, though.

FriendFeed blog widget: because a shirtless...

FriendFeed blog widget: because a shirtless Arnold Schwarzenegger is what I want visitors to my tech blog seeing.

Looks like I have a choice to make. I can:

remove the FriendFeed widget from my blog,
be more conscientious about posting content to FriendFeed (honestly, I feel I do not post enough, so the thought of having to restrict myself really rankles),
make sure that I post five techie things immediately after a goofy post, so that the fluff doesn’t stay on the widget long, or
get over it and just have fun.

I’m not sure what to do. I’m leaning toward all three. Pushing down the fluff posts might work, but if someone marks an older post as liked or comments on it, I think it will just pop back onto the blog. That means I’m going to have to be behave and hope that the two or three people who visit my blog in given month will forgive me when I decide to let my hair down a little. At this point, I’m really not considering removing the widget.

Because of the controversy on FriendFeed about Robert Scoble’s posting of an Amazon Affiliate link (and because I’ve often wondered if I should), I have updated my tech blog with a disclosure widget. I’ve never gotten a check from any advertising from either Google or Amazon, but I have this dream that I might one day get assistance buying my beloved technology. Hope that’s alright by you.

Like countless others, I have been known to say that I learn something new every day. Today was only minutes old when I learned what not to do when installing an iPhone update via iTunes in a 40 yr-old house that’s not been updated to meet modern power demands.

One should not use a PC; one should use a portable device (laptop or MacBook) with a well-charged battery, or at least one shouldn’t use a desktop connected to a UPS that one hasn’t verified can handle the power load of one’s new LCD. One should not have a portable heater cranked up and connected to the outlet below the UPS. And lastly, but the most important, ONE SHOULD NOT BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM DRYING ONE’S WET HAIR ON THE HIGH SETTING!

I think it was Wednesday that I learned that I should not mess with my iPhone’s master.passwd file, which caused me to have to start from scratch in the first place. The saying goes that we can never learn too much, but I’m starting to disagree. Now, please excuse me while I start restoring my apps, email, contacts, and joy. Yeah, for all my iStupidity, all I lost was a few minutes of my life re-starting the install process. The phone wasn’t hosed entirely, thank Jobs.

Yesterday, I had a high priority call in my queue about a USB device not responding. Within 3 minutes, I’d sorted through the mess of cables and determined the device wasn’t connected. The reply? “Oh no! You’re going to blog me again!” I assured her/him I’d not been in the mood to blog for months.

Learning about Imindi:

Finally got around to checking out the Imindi panel video from TechCrunch50 2008. One of the panelists who was commenting totally had an even shorter attention span than I do, because he suggested that the Imindi guys do something that the presenter said was already a feature. And did the panelist then go on to say he wouldn’t even want to use that feature? Not saying I’d have done any better; it must be really tough to sit up there in front of a lot of people and contribute something useful. At any rate, I’ve played around with mindmaps; I have to wonder if the Imindi thing is something your average pc support tech could contribute to.

I’d like to get HTC Streaming Media, TCPMP and GSPlayer to play well together on my WinMo phone. I want the right app to launch whether I want YouTube, Shoutcast or…uh…whatever HTC’s app does. No, I haven’t yet looked for a solution. I’ll get around to it. It might be as simple as installing an updated version of something.
